About the Author
Valerio Massimo Manfredi is an archaeologist and scholar of the ancient Greek and Roman world. He is the author of 16 novels, which have won him literary awards and have sold 12 million copies. His Alexander trilogy has been translated into 38 languages and published in 62 countries and the film rights have been acquired by Universal Pictures. His novel The Last Legion was made into a film starring Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley. He has also written screenplays for film and television, contributed to journalistic articles, and conducted cultural programs and television documentaries.

Informative but not excellent

Tyrant by Manfredi is a very informative and well researched book. The book gives us a wealth of information about Sicily- geographic and political- the relations with Sparta and Athens. It is also interesting for someone who has read accounts of the Peloponnesian war to see some of the events occuring in the backdrop and their impact on Sicily.
However there are quite a few things about the book that impact its quality. One is the translation. I am unaware of how the author builds the narrative in Italian but in English, the narrative jarrs. The dialogues also are confusing at certain points and do not flow continuously. One is forced to go back and re-read at certain places to figure out who is speaking what. Another is the characterisation of Dionysius. The transformation of Dionysus into the ruthless tyrant because of circumstances is well done but could have been better done in my opinion. There is not much focus on Dionysius and what goes on in his minds- the turmoil and the angst. We see his friends and his brother observing and regretting his changes and reflecting on them but we do not see things from Dionysius' perspective.
The book does have its touching moments. And the bond between Leptines and Dionysius and the character of Philistus is very well brought out.
On the whole, it is a good book and if you are a history buff its definitely worth a read.

A Rewarding, Informative Book

This is my first Manfredi book, but I frequently read historical fiction. This book is a biography about a historical character, not an adventure or event set in the past.
The protagonist of the biography has great strengths and great flaws. The evolution of the character during the story gives the reader cause to often reevaluate my views of the protagonist.
I also liked that the book was well researched while being set in a time and place that is less discussed than others. I feel like I learned more reading Tyrant than reading yet another book set during the Greek / Persian wars for example.
The author is a history professor from Italy and he chooses not to insert a great deal of his own conjecture about motives into the protagonist. Instead the book challenges the reader to come up with their own motives for the actors in the story. So be prepared for a story that covers all the historical facts, but does not reveal all the details about the thoughts in the character's minds.

The best book from Manfredi

Again, this is a review of a book that I bought and read long ago (in 2005), hugely enjoyed, but didn't bother to review at the time. Contrary to other reviewers, I found Tyrant, the life story of Dionysios the Elder of Syracuse, to be Massimo's best book, probably because this is essentially a historical novel with little fiction in it and because Manfredi obviously knows his topic well.
The basic story is about the descent of a young (but rather ambitious) man from a good family of Syracuse (although not among the highest aristocratic families) "into a merciless despot", as another reviewer puts it. However, this is certainly not "the story of Dionysios written by Dionysios" for, despite all the facts explaining why he becomes such a despot, I certainly did not get to sympathize with him. Another interesting character, presented as a contrast to the Tyrant and who, unlike him, has not put aside his initial idealism, is that of his brother Leptines.
I won't go into too much details and spoil the story by summarizing it. The only thing I can see is that since Dionysios became tyrant on the basis of his abilito to win the war against Carthage, the book is full of battles and sieges, as one war follows another. Another element is that Valerio Massimo Manfredi paints a picture of Dionysios which I belikeve to be much more convincing that the one that you find in the historical sources which almost unanimously blacken his nale and put each and every of hos actions in the most unfavorable light they can come up with. I do agree that Manfredi's book does show some csympathy for his main character at times and does largely omit some facts - such as his efforts to appear as a great poet and philosopher - which mke him more ridicule than anything else since he seems to have been rather untalented in this respect. However, his parano�a and cruelty, however justified, are rather well described. Some elements may be missing from the book, especially regarding the relations among and within Sicilian cities at the time - the so-called "stasis" or social conflicts between oligarchic and "democratic" factions that often lead to civil war.
Anyway, to learn more about this period, the most accessible book is Jeff Champion's first volume on the Tyrants in Sicily. It has some limitations, but it certainly is a useful addition to this book if you are looking for more historical context.
So, four stars, but not five.
