Gr 7 Up—A passionate call to action by one of Britain's most influential environmentalists, this work gives us a snapshot of the current state of our planet and a sense of what is to come if we do not change course. The book is divided into three sections: primary causes of change, major consequences, and a glimpse at the future. Each subject area (for example, "Rise of Consumerism," "The Greenhouse Effect," "Nature's Spaces") is given a spread with a couple of paragraphs of text and bright graphs, charts, maps, and diagrams that illustrate key statistics. Some pages also feature color photographs. A glossary, index, and references (primarily online and quite recent) add great value to this sobering volume. Text boxes on a few pages headed "What Can We Do?" and "What Can I Do?" offer practical suggestions to those who wish to take positive action, and help temper the overwhelmingly distressing nature of the facts presented. VERDICT A comprehensive and visually appealing work that tackles subjects of importance. Ideal for browsing and as a jumping-off point for in-depth research.—Laura Simeon, Open Window School Library, WA

I'm a teacher and love this book - I teach 1st 2nd and 3rd grade, but for my highest 3rd graders who are eager to go more in depth with global issues, this book is perfect. And visually stunning! Even students who aren't reading at this advanced level still benefit from the visuals.

What's up with Earth? Juniper's book tells you in 200 pages of graphics and comments. Huge amount of info for the price.

This is a somewhat difficult book to rate. It's really 200 plus pages of tables, graphs and charts, quite nicely presented. There's a glossary and sourcing (a little hard to read). The text is primarily captions and some explanatory material .

It's broken into three major sections: Drivers of change, consequences of change and bending the curves (which is more of less, what can be done to blunt or end problems). The drivers are human population increase, increased energy use, increasing resource exploitation and related. The impacts are various kinds of environmental degradation (including the oceans), from forest loss and ocean acidification to rising sea level and soil erosion. The curve bending part is optimistic, including alternative sources of power (tides, for example). It's strongly environmentalist, and has a quite strong bias against the consumer society and is mistrustful of corporate entities, so the commentary may rile readers who are die-hard free-market advocates or who do not credit global warming. The data that Juniper provides is difficult to argue with (and I credit the data and sources as excellent).

Each of the three main sections is broken into subsections. I found some of these to be particularly interesting. In the Drivers section, the portions on population growth and fuel for growth stand out. In the Consequences of change section, the portion on better lives for many and sea changes (literally the sea) are best. In the last section, the section of shaping the future stands out.

The book is nicely designed and given the large amount of data so well presented, the price is hard to beat. It's inexpensive enough to be used as a textbook, and is readable enough for an intelligent high schooler to easily read. It's a useful reference--although the atmosphere and some other portions of the planet are altering rapidly, so that in only a couple of years some of the tables may be dated.
