A Deceptive Title - there's very little "advanced" veneering in here!

Nine of the eleven chapters in this book are clearly not related to "Advanced Veneering". The author's or publisher's reasoning for the title of this book is a mystery. Here are some chapter titles...
Veneer Milling
Purchasing/Inspection
Flattening & Conditioning Veneer
Repairs
Layout Examples
Straight Seaming
Taping
Pressing
Do these sound like advanced topics? It's not likely that any of these chapters would be of interest to a craftsman looking for advanced veneering information.
Only two chapters contain anything that would be considered "advanced". Those chapters are Layout Techniques and Spiral Matching. Both of these chapters are helpful in some ways but the core and the focus do not match the misleading title of the book.
In my opinion, advanced veneering would include such subjects as curved work or bent work, marquetry/inlay, veneering on two planes (multi-contoured surfaces), radial matches, etc.
A Child's Picture Book
I bought and returned this book because the contents range from ridiculous to outright absurd. What you have here is essentially a photo album with captions similar to a child's story book. On the average page, 70 percent of the surface area contains pictures, 20 percent is blank space, and 10 percent is actual text. Among other things, the picture content includes the following...

A guy holding a chainsaw
The author brushing/cleaning his work area
Pictures of the author's sanding tool arsenal
There is also a picture of a handheld veneer splicing tool but it shows the author "using" it on a scrap piece of veneer in which there clearly is no seam! I don't understand how it could be so difficult to show it being used to stitch two pieces of veneer together. That is what the tool does.
It should also be mentioned that the pages are thicker than normal giving the impression of actual content from the outside but feeling more like a children's book when you turn the pages.
Foreword and Glossary
Marc Adams wrote the foreword to this book in which he praises the author's style and technique. I wonder Mr. Adams, if you read this book? Or did you simply agree to a fluff page of words because the author has attended your school? Marc Adam's praises of this book tarnish his reputation.
The end of the book consists of a glossary which could at best be described as laughable. With all due respect to Mr. Grove, I doubt anyone who is reading an "Advanced Veneering" book needs a glossary in which the terms tat are defined include "join", "sapwood", "grades", "scroll saw", and "veneer". That last one is just ludicrous. Anyone who needs a definition for any of these terms should be considering a dictionary instead of this book.
Grammatical Flubs and Rube Goldberg Techniques
The core stock that is used on a veneer panel is known as a substrate. The author calls it "sub-straight". A woodworking tool to join two edges is called a jointer. The author says its a "joiner". This kind of foolishness should not have been published.
The veneer taping chapter complicates a simple process. You don't need a clothes iron to apply veneer tape. I've been veneering for 20 years and I have never used or seen a clothes iron used in the taping process. In fact, I would say that heat is troublesome with a veneer joint. This book also suggests the use of a veneer tape dispenser (an unnecessary expense) and the one shown in the book is not even available outside of an antiques store.
The reader will also find multiple alternate ways to accomplish the same goal within the veneering process. Instead of streamlining the course, the author offers a menu of techniques in which only one is really suitable and used by most craftsmen. These procedures included jointing with a router, jointer, and belt sander. Why show numerous ways to cut a seam line? One technique works... use a cheap hand held veneer saw but the author even gets this wrong.
He first walks you through saw sharpening with a method I would call "pointless". The suggested first step is to file the points off of the veneer saw and the second step is to use the file to make the points again! The instructions conclude with "flattening" the back of the saw. If you have ever used an imported hand held veneer saw, you know that flattening is simply not possible. What he is really referring to here is "honing". Go ahead and attempt to truly flatten the saw blade. You will be left with a sliver of shiny metal.
Bad and Antiquated Advice
The book suggest the use of glue for joining two pieces of veneer side by side. I've never found this necessary. The suggestion may come from an old school edge gluing technique which involved holding the edges together with pins while the glue dries. Time spent to glue edges together is simply time wasted.
The author also suggests that commercial veneer softener is not as good as his home brewed version which he claims to "add structural integrity to the veneer". Once a veneer is treated with any kind of softener it is somewhat futile to have concern over structural integrity. Softener is used to make veneer less brittle. That alone solves the concern for structural integrity. If you look at the lengthy and messy process for using his home brew, you will quickly understand why commercial veneer softener is so much better.
I was astonished to read the suggestion that white glue is suitable for veneering. Then my astonishment turned to disgust where the author suggests that veneer panels made with white glue must be vacuum bagged for three to six hours. That is wrong, wrong, wrong. Water-based glues need air to cure. If you press for longer than 90 minutes, you are asking for all sorts of trouble. Additionally, he recommends 25 to 27" of Mercury (that is the amount of vacuum in the vacuum bag). Most vacuum bag users can not achieve such a high vacuum because of altitude or simply because vacuum pumps that create 27" are very expensive. The perfect vacuum level in a vacuum bag is 19 to 22" of Mercury. With anything beyond that, the glue line will be thinned and you will run the risk of de-lamination. This can also create blotching in the veneer face.
The book also suggests an antiquated method of vacuum bagging in which the bag vacuum port is under the bag and fed (via a tube) through a hole in the bottom platen. This method has vanished from use in real wood shops. Look for a bag where the vacuum port is on top and use breather fabric to allow the air to flow out of the port.
Conclusion
It is unfortunate that this book offers very little to the professional and advanced veneer user. It is also a huge disservice to would-be veneer users by scaring them into antiquated, complicated, and contaminated techniques. This book is proof that anyone can have anything published these days.

Informative and Beautiful

Although I'm not a woodworker, I found this book to be extremely informative and expanded my knowledge on the art of veneering. The photos are beautiful, the text is easily readable, and the down-to-earth tone is helpful. It's on my Christmas gift list for Dad. I highly recommend it for anyone who is interesting in expanding their knowledge of veneering.

I like the step-by-step approach

This is a great book on the art of veneering from one of the best. I found it informative but not overly technical or confusing...the writing has a unique and entertaining voice, too. The photos are beautiful and add a lot to the step-by-step process that Grove explains. I learned plenty of tips and insights in these pages that the author had to learn the hard way. If and when this book saves me from committing even one costly mistake on a future project, it will have paid for itself many times over. Highly recommended for up-and-comers interested in veneering.
