Wonderful debut novel!

Run to Me is a wonderful debut novel by Aussie transplant Erin Golding, now living in London. It's an unlikely love story between a teacher and a student. Golding does an excellent job handling what might be an uncomfortable topic for some with good taste and strong writing. I love how running brings the story and the forbidden lovers together from their unhappy situations. Abby Fox and Paul Beckett both have good reason to 'run away' when they happen to find each other. The dialogue is particularly good and that propels the reader through the story quite quickly. The ending really makes you think and I liked that a lot. Brava on a job well done! I look forward to this writer's next effort!

An unconventional love story

Set in a small Australian town, Run To Me is an unconventional love story which explores the development of a relationship between thirty something English teacher Abby Fox and seventeen year old high school student Paul Beckett.

It's a challenging subject to write about given that the teacher-student dynamic and age difference are well entrenched social taboo's but I think Golding does a good job of exploring the genuine connection between Abby and Paul, without ignoring the very real issues that stand between them.

I was surprised to find I did sympathise with Abby at times. Golding achieves this by using the first person point of view which reveals Abby's faulty reasoning process, giving it some legitimacy in context. Abby is not a predator, she is conflicted about her attraction to Paul and does make an effort to resist it. Her marriage crisis also highlights her vulnerability and her genuine desire for love. Though none of this entirely excuses her poor choices it does create the necessary space within which the author can explore the complexities of the relationship.

I was impressed by the authenticity of Paul's voice, a mixture of hormone soaked crudity, adolescent confusion and blossoming maturity. His physical attraction to Abby is not unsurprising for a seventeen year old but it's sweet in a way to see that attraction morph into something deeper. I really appreciated the growth of Paul's character not only in terms of his relationship with Abby but also with his father, and his consideration of his future.

There are a few minor errors in the text but on the whole Run To Me is well written, the first person points of view are authentic and the dialogue is natural. The story develops at a good pace and maintains the tension well. The ending is a satisfying fit for both the plot and the characters.

Run to Me is an interesting novel which explores a potentially sensational storyline with compassion and sensitivity. While not everyone will be able comfortable with some elements of the novel, it is an impressive debut from a self published author.

A Great, Thought Provoking Read (It's really a 4.5 star book but Amazon doesn't do half stars!)

Abby Fox is a teacher who is unhappy in her life and ignored by her husband. Paul Beckett is her 17 year old student who is living a miserable existence, made worse by his father's tormenting. Run to Me is the story of how their relationship evolves beyond teacher-student and how Abby's life falls apart because of it.

When I started I didn't think "Run to Me" was going to take the direction it did. I assumed it was maybe an inspiring story of a dedicated teacher helping an underdog student change his life. Similar to an after school special but that is not what I got. As the story progressed and I started to see little cracks in Abby's teacher fa�ade I found myself struggling to "like" her. Little missteps and indiscretions that broke the teacher/student boundaries became more frequent and as I read it I kept thinking "No! No!". I actually said that once or twice out loud! And then they slept together. When I read that part I wanted to hate her but she was still the same unhappy woman from the beginning of the story. She didn't instantly become a villain. I felt for her and could still empathize with her.

As Abby's friends and family find out what has happened she deals with the fall out; Fractured relationships, anger and estrangement.

The author, like Paul in the book, read Wuthering Heights in her final year of high school. "When I came to write my own novel I was inspired by the idea of passion and desire can have such a strong power over us." I loved Wuthering Heights and thought Erin Golding did a beautiful job writing subtle parallels between the two books

This is a tough one for me. Seriously tough! The writing was really good and the story was too. It was the subject matter that really made this book difficult for me. Which is, I believe, the whole point. What I really liked it that it was a departure from the light reads I have been into lately. Run to Me will make you feel a lot of things which is always a wonderful quality in a book, even if the those thing aren't "nice" feelings. And a lot of them aren't nice feelings. I actually spent a lot of time thinking about how if I would be so understanding if the roles were reversed and it was a male teacher and a female student? Does "almost" 18 make it any better?

I hope you will read this book. It's a great read and I think you will really enjoy it. It will definitely push some boundaries, it certainly did for me. And if you are anything like me you will be thinking about it long after you've finished it. I think this would be a great book club selection too because there is so much discuss.

This is Erin Golding's first novel and I am very much looking forward to reading more from her.

Interesting, fascinating history book!

(This is a kid's review) I really enjoyed reading this book. I already knew about most of the people it mentioned, but not all of them--and definitely not as in depth as the book explained them. It was very interesting to read, and covered a lot of ancient and more modern famous figures! It's not boring at all to just sit down and read it word for word--you learn a lot of cool new things about all these people! This book makes reading history even more fun.

About the Author
"M.A.Pai received his B.E degree from University of Madras in 1953, M.S and PhD degrees from UC Berkeley in 1957 and 1961 respectively, all in Electrical Engineering. He was on the Faculty of IIT Kanpur from 1963 to 1981. Since 1981 he was on the Faculty of University of Illinois from where he retired in 2004.He is currently Prof Emeritus there.He received the S.S.Bhatnagar award in 1974 in Engineering Sciences and was Dean R&D at IIT Kanpur from 1976 to 1978. He has written several books both in India and the U.S. His research interests are in power system stability, control and the emerging new power grid issues. He is a Fellow of I.A.S, I.E (India), INSA ,INAE and IEEE. Dheeman Chatterjee received the B.E. and M.E. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Bengal Engineering College (Deemed University), Shibpur, Howrah, W.B., India, in 1996 and 2002, respectively and his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. not a non-fiction travel book, but still good

I assumed this would be a travel book as so many of his titles are. It is, in a way, but it's fiction. I liked the book quite a lot, particularly the first chapter, entitled Altar Boy (1956), which dealt with clashing views of religion and how some people's, however well meant, can have a debilitating affect on others'. I was struck by how much it reminded me of some Mormon fiction, particularly Levi Peterson's.

What he means by his 'secret history', by the way, is his considerable appetite for sexual exploits. This activity dominates the book, unfortunately. Don't get me wrong. I have as healthy an appetite for sex as anyone, but I'm not really all that interested in hearing others brag about their own exploits.

There are worse things, though. It's one thing to read about such things in a novel or a pornographic magazine which one can choose to read or not, but it's worse to have it foisted on you in public in the form of billboard ads such as the infamous Calvin Klein underwear ads of a few years ago.

Anyway, back to the point. The first chapter of this book is, to my mind, a true literary masterpiece. But Theroux is a great travel writer, and the rest is worth reading for the descriptions of places in Africa and India if nothing else. Toward the end of the book, Theroux makes an interesting observation on travel which rang true for me. The story makes a moving tribute to the religion of Islam, as well.

The scene takes place in a hotel room where he and his wife are staying, above a mosque in Madras (Chennai) just before the call to prayer. I include here some additional text to give the quote some context:

"Below us the faithful were gathering. I watched Jenny's intense concentration and admired her reverence. She picked up her camera quickly and fingered and focused. But she did not shoot a picture -- out of respect, I felt. She said nothing, only watched, and I kept looking at her, the way she scrutinized the scene at the mosque. I thought how travel was composed of moments like this: discoveries and reverences separated by great inconvenience. These encounters, taken together, added up to one's experiences of a place -- the inconvenience had to be forgotten and displaced by the epiphany -- like this call to prayer."
