In these tablets, El, the creator deity, and his wife Asherah lived in a vineyard or garden on the slopes of Mt Ararat, known in the Bible as the mountain where Noah's ark came to rest. The first sinner was not a human being, but an evil god called Horon who wanted to depose El. Horon was thrown down from the mountain of the gods, and in revenge he transformed the Tree of Life in the garden into a Tree of Death and enveloped the whole world in a poisonous fog. Adam was sent down to restore life on earth, but failed because Horon in the form of a huge serpent bit him. As a result Adam and his wife lost their immortality. This myth found its way into the Bible, the Apocrypha and the Pseudepigraphical literature, though it was often transformed or treated critically. Adam, Eve, and the Devil traces the reception of the myth in its many forms, and also presents the oldest pictures of Adam and Eve ever identified (one of them on the front cover of the book).

Great book!

As a paper engineer and artist with some electronic experience, I have found that learning about gears, pulleys, motors, and the actual mechanics of getting things to move somewhat daunting. There are basic books geared towards beginners as well as books filled with inspiring complex examples that are impossible to navigate unless you already have a high level of expertise. This book is the book I've been looking for. It is really useful and very comprehensive in its approach and scope. It starts with the basics, but, takes you through a wide array of materials, techniques, and examples. Its section on motors (and arduino control) is great. I think its a fantastic book for students and individuals with varying skills, experience, and interests. Highly recommend it.

Fantastic Presentation

I'm sure the way you respond to this book will depend heavily on your experience level as a mechanical and electronics tinkerer. I happen to be right in the bullseye of the author's target audience: this book is perfect for where I am in my informal education in those areas. My favorite part is that Ms. Roberts makes specific recommendations for tools and for parts and materials sources. The information is presented in a very logical order. It is intentionally not too deep - just the bare essentials to get you started experimenting. But with plenty of information about how to go further. If you want to learn how to build machines that move, this is a great place to start.

Relatively basic introductory book on "mechatronics"

OK. Relatively basic introductory book on "mechatronics". If you have never laid hands on a stepper motor, gear motor, or some kind of microcontroller such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi then this might be a great book for you. But if you are advanced past that level I would not recommend it.

About the Author
Richard Poplak was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1973 and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1989. A co-founder of the successful Canadian music label 2wars & A Revolution Records, Richard is also a trained filmmaker and has directed numerous music videos, earning five nominations at the 2005 MuchMusic Video Awards. Richard has written for various publications in Canada and South Africa, including Toronto Life, Canadian Living, and CBC Online. A little uneven, but ultimately worth while

The Sheikh's Batmobile is part travelogue, part cultural investigation, and part personal exploration. Mr. Poplak visits several Muslim countries searching for the consequences of the hegemony of Western popular cultural in the region. I'm not quite sure that's right though: It is almost as if he is exploring how Western popular culture manifests itself in Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, the UAE, Indonesia, Iran, Afghanistan, and others (I know I'm missing a few.)

The book is often funny, and Mr. Poplak has a penchant for finding the humor and absurdity in the ways in which American popular culture is twisted, changed, and manipulated in the Muslim world. The best chapters are the ones on the Arabic version of the Simpsons and the WWE loving kids in Afghanistan.

Some of the chapters are a little less interesting--the death metal scene in Indonesia sticks out as one of these--but the book does a fairly good job of presenting the issue. One scene in particular stuck out for me: The author was discussing the Arabic version of the Simpsons with the producer. The Arabic version scrubbed out some of the social commentary that makes the Simpsons so funny and popular in the United States. The Arabic producer asked the author (I'm paraphrasing here) "Is that all we have, entertainment?"

I've been asking myself that question many times since reading it, especially in the face of the upcoming royal wedding, Donald Trump, and the other inanities presented to us as news. It is surprising--I found an insight to our own culture in a book trying to find insights in how our culture impacts Muslim culture.

I happened to come across Richard Poplak's "The Sheikh's Batmobile" at a local used book store a while back. It wasn't a book I was familiar with but the cover looked interesting enough and I decided to take the gamble. I'm genuinely glad I did as I found Poplak's writing to be some of the most insightful, nuanced and entertaining commentary on the Islamic world that I've read to date.

A pop culture commentator by trade, Poplak visits nearly 20 Muslim-majority countries over the span of two years in the hopes of viewing firsthand how the Western pop culture he loves has found its way to, and uniquely ingrained itself in, the Dar al-Islam.

Perhaps Poplak's greatest accomplishment was his ability to humanize those he encountered. He refuses to fall into the easy but tired, Orientalist stereotypes and one-dimensional characters that many Middle East observers, intentionally or otherwise, so often seem to do. Throughout "The Sheikh's Batmobile," from Libya to Indonesia and a lot of places in between, the author finds the similarities that bind us far more than the differences that divide our cultures.

In times of such turmoil Poplak's work reads as a refreshing reminder of our common, shared humanity.

The Bible made easy

I have recently started attending a bible study. As I was reading the various books of the bible I had a lot of questions. I needed something in plain english that summarized the individual books. This book does just that. It gives you a summary of what you are reading and what you should be getting out of the chapter. You also get the handy outlines that help in a bible study group. I would recommend this for anyone (young or old) who is reading the bible. It will make everything a lot clearer to you.

Just like new!

I was a little leery of ordering a used book sight unseen, but Amazon have never let me down before and just as stated the book was in very good condition, not to mention the price I paid - $0.01. The shipping and handling was much more than the price of the book. But it was all worth it. I use my book for my Bible study class at church. One of my church members have the same book and told me she would try and find me a copy. She did for 1 penny on Amazon and now other members are purchasing the same book from Amazon.com.

An engaging book with a flawed binding

This is a brief and engaging outline of the content and messages of each book of the bible. It is compact, light, and easy to carry--slightly larger than a pocket novel. It is an invaluable aid to summarizing the important points.
On the other hand, the book itself resists comfortable opening and the sloppy binding causes the pages to wrinkle and stiffen awkwardly while the book is being read. Hence my four-star rating. Identical content with a new binding would be welcome.

You too can become a desrt bum!!

I have read this book a few times it is a good read. Some of it is very outdated (written in the 60's and updated a few times up to about 1979). After reading it you get the idea that treasure hunter = desert bum that grabs anything they can find worth a few bucks, like the old coffee grinder and picture frames Karl finds. In treasure hunting and metal detecting circles this book is very much in demand but no longer published. One tip that I would take to heart while undertaking a weekend of desert hunting...is sleep in a sleeping bag and not on the ground or you will wake up with snakes using you to keep warm!!

The Old Master's Masterpiece

This is an extraordinary book! It is an absolutely first-rate guide to hunting for and finding lost and buried treasure. And "buried treasure" encompasses far more than most readers will imagine. Some days I think "Sudden Wealth" is the best single book ever written on finding treasure. Some days I think it is the original THM #6.

If you are interested in finding money and items that can be converted to money - in any city, village, town, hamlet, farm, ranch or campsite in the United States (if not the world) - this is your book!

And - unlike so many of the "treasure" books out there written by people who claim to be professional treasure hunters, Karl was all that - and more. He was not just a professional treasure hunter - he was also a professional treasure finder. Karl was a rock of a man - and he was all pure ore!

The title for the first edition / first printing of this book is "The Treasure Hunter's Manual - 6th Edition." The spine states "von Mueller on Buried Treasure" but that's not the title.

There are 3 editions of this 6th Edition. For the record - to my knowledge copies of the 1st through 5th have never been located.

The first was printed by Karl himself in Grand Prairie, Texas (1961). This is the famous "Special Printing" - a roster of ghost towns and the names and addresses of treasure hunters all across the United States. That list got Karl into a spot of trouble because burglers used it as a guide.

8 States Associates then published the second edition of the 6th with very few changes. Both these editions have tan softcovers (you may never set your eyes on a genuine hardcover edition). Karl's are numbered, as well.

Then RAM came out with several printings. Photos of people using Garrett detectors were added, the very useful book list ("Bibliography of Treasure Hunting") was removed and a list of other RAM books substituted, and positive mentions of Garrett detectors added. Plans and instructions for building KvonM's "Little Monster" metal detector were removed (no surprise there).

If you can afford it, the two original editions are the best. But those are becoming a bit pricey. Start with the RAM editions if you must. Soon enough you'll make money and then be able to afford these - and quite a few other things, as well...

**Calm Trader Is A Winner**

This was one of the most amazing books I've ever read on trader psychology. I felt extremely inspired after reading each chapter in this book. Not only was it short and to the point, but it kept me engaged the whole time. It is true that succeeding in the markets in (1/3) logic and (2/3) psychology. This is another winner in Steve's arsenal of published books. And for only $2.99, you are doing yourself a disservice by not giving it a try.
