Totally Unofficial: The Autobiography of Raphael Lemkin, by Raphael Lemkin

Among the greatest intellectual heroes of modern times, Raphael Lemkin lived an extraordinary life of struggle and hardship, yet altered international law and redefined the world’s understanding of group rights. He invented the concept and word “genocide” and propelled the idea into international legal status. An uncommonly creative pioneer in ethical thought, he twice was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Although Lemkin died alone and in poverty, he left behind a model for a life of activism, a legacy of major contributions to international law, and—not least—an unpublished autobiography. Presented here for the first time is his own account of his life, from his boyhood on a small farm in Poland with his Jewish parents, to his perilous escape from Nazi Europe, through his arrival in the United States and rise to influence as an academic, thinker, and revered lawyer of international criminal law.

Review
"If the history of the Western moral imagination is the story of an enduring and unending revolt against human cruelty, there are few more consequential figures than Raphael Lemkin—and few whose achievements have been more ignored by the general public. . . . Totally Unofficial is at its most alive when he evokes his childhood in the Jewish world of Eastern Europe before World War I. . . . Vivid chapters of Lemkin's autobiography describe the incredible odyssey of his escape."—Michael Ignatieff, New Republic (Michael Ignatieff New Republic)

Raphael Lemkin And His Muse
By marcia abcarian
No one with a broad concern for the human condition could remain unmoved and without deep gratitude for the achievement this book represents. It offers the very touch and smell of the soil in which Raphael Lemkin's central concept germinated and conveys the calculating, insistent, unrelenting personal initiative it took for him to keep it alive.

But, beyond all that, I was struck by the irony that, when addressing anything but genocide and the law, Lemkin's writing seemed to take wing, as in his descriptions of childhood, his depictions of nature, suggesting to me that he sacrificed a profound literary creativity in order fulfill the mission he set for himself.

The Story of One Man's Mission To Save Humanity from Itself
By Na Steinson Ehrlich
I met Raphael Lemkin in 1958. I was a student of Public Law & Government at Columbia Univ. Dr. Lemkin was an inspiration as a person. He had a mission to protect the cultures and peoples of the world from the heinous crime that befell his family and European Jewry during WWII. This book reveals his courage, his persistence and his positive attitude towards being able to do something important for the world in spite of all his struggles and hardships. He argued that If killing one person is a crime in most societies, what about the crime of murdering a whole people? The United Nations in its infancy was the perfect venue for supporting a Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, a term that he had coined. I thoroughly recommend this book to any one who is interested to know how one person persisted in changing the world through personal persuasion and the application of law. His belief in the law is a much needed reminder that all cultures have developed laws that circumscribe human behavior in order to survive with dignity and order.

early adulthood nor escape in Poland - I'm sure because it was too painful and brought up the 49 family members lost to ...
By Peter
Raphael Lemkin was a regular visitor to my parent's home when I was growing up. He was my grand-uncle. I remember him well, and my parents and their friends speaking about him and his work both when he was and wasn't around; equally after he died (all too young). So, I knew well the story of his life and work. After his death all of his papers and books, etc. from his apartment in NYC lay preciously guarded under my train table in the basement of our family home in Hempstead, N.Y. - all except one - his autobiography was held by a rather unconscionable and greedy Mr. Gabriel, who wanted to find a buyer for the autobiography which he had custody of. Though having seen all of his other papers (now in several archives, donated by my father Robert Raymond Lemkin DDS) when they were in our home for 1.5 decades, I had never seen the manuscript of his autobiography. It took all these many years for someone to lovingly learn to read his handwriting; understand his revisions and put it in a logical order and complete a few parts that were only in outline. The book was a treasure for me to read. Raphael never talked about his boyhood, early adulthood, nor escape from Poland - I'm sure because it was too painful, and brought up the 49 family members lost to the Holocaust despite his pleas for others to flee with him. As persons here and elsewhere have noted, he devoted his life to one thing - using law and the power of morality to fight against the dark side of humanity - against crimes against humanity, against wars, and against the term of his coinage: genocide!
He was a lonely and poor man who always fought on against great odds and the obstacles of power and entrenched notions of international law and the interests of nations. He could have had a more normal life, but he chose the one he did because he felt he could choose no other - and we are all the richer for that; however, there is still a VERY long way to go to see his dreams ultimately realized. Long an obscure figure, except to the family and the few who knew him, his time now seems to have arrived. Many books and films have been made - others I know of are in production. Courses are taught on Genocide and some universities even have programs dedicated to its study.
Personally, he taught me how one person could make a difference in the World, and that one should first consider themselves a citizen of the World, before thinking of unimportant things like 'nationality' or 'clan', 'religion', speaker of this or that language, etc. Too many say 'what can I, one person, do?' I think my uncle Raphael answered that with the way he led his life.
I really enjoyed reading this book and it rings true to the man I knew and heard from and about so many times at my family home and from others. I was touched with the sensitivity he portrayed his innocent pre-war years, living in the Pale - as well as the descriptions of his worries, strategies, doubts and hopes to see his dream realized. It even was, partly, by the time he died. Sadly, it was not until many years after his death that the USA finally signed onto the Genocide Treaty of the United Nations (which he wrote and 'unofficially' haunted the U.N. to persuade nations to sign on to it at the U.N. and ratify it in their own homelands.
My thanks to the editor who so wonderfully made this unfinished manuscript a reality. I would suggest this book highly to anyone concerned about the issues that Raphael Lemkin devoted his life to, and for anyone who wants to know how one person can make a difference in the World....if only more of us would try. Peter R. Lemkin

Nelle Harper Lee’sTo Kill a Mockingbirdwas published in 1960 and became an instant bestseller. Two years later it was an Academy Award– winning film. Today, it remains standard—and beloved—reading in English classes. But Lee never wanted “the book” to define who she was, which explains her aversion to any kind of publicity. Kerry Madden conducted extensive research for this Up Close biography, which reveals Lee to be a down-to-earth Southern woman who prefers to live simply, like her neighbors do, despite the fact that she is a treasured literary legend. Madden’s in-depth biography is now more relevant than ever: 2015’s historic release of Go Set a Watchman—written by Lee before To Kill a Mockingbird and lost for decades—has thrust Lee and her work back into the spotlight.

*Starred Review* From the Up Close series, this informative biography spotlights writer Harper Lee, who grew up in Monroeville, Alabama, and studied law in college before deciding to become a writer. After working and writing in New York City for many years, she found a publisher for her first novel. Her life was transformed by the publication of To Kill a Mockingbird (1960), which quickly became a best-seller, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and the basis for an unusually successful movie adaptation. Though Lee appreciated the critical acclaim, she found the unrelenting demands for interviews, public appearances, and personal contact increasingly unwelcome and withdrew. Given the writer’s refusal to grant access to any biographer and her closest friends’ and relatives’ reluctance to discuss her, Madden has done a fine job of researching the novelist’s life and presenting it with respect for her point of view. The sensitive treatment of race relations during Lee’s youth and the section on three trials that may have inspired parts of her novel will interest students researching To Kill a Mockingbird. A lengthy acknowledgments section, source notes for the many quotes, and an extensive bibliography conclude this unusually readable biography of an elusive figure in American letters. Grades 7-12. --Carolyn Phelan

Review
Extensive source notes and an excellent bibliography round out this superb biography, one of the best in the Up Close series. --Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Not much new here
By Alicia A. Powers
I just read "Mockingbird" by Shields and "Up Close" back to back. Shields book was done in 2006, "Up Close" in 2009. There was very little new in "Up Close" that wasn't covered much better and in more detail by Shields. In fact, a lot of the authors' comments seemed almost exact. It's quite amazing that most the citations used were exactly the same. The photo cover for "Up Close" is also the same photo on the back of "Mockingbird," just a mirror version. This version seems a summary of the earlier book. If one wants the shorter version, apparently geared to younger than adult readers, "Up Close" will do, but Shields has also done a "for young readers" version. "Up Close" does update Lee's status since 2006, but that's only 5 or 6 small pages in the last chapter. Madden acknowledges Shields' work as an "unofficial biography," but Harper Lee also declined to cooperate with Madden's work, only wished her "the best, whether [she] pursued the project or not." Regardless of which you read, so far, there are no definitive answers to readers' most often asked questions. Facts are provided as available; some suppositions are drawn. The conclusions are up to the reader.

Valuable, interesting but someone else's personal experience
By A. G. Plumb
The are two parts of this book that I particularly value, and a long section that I just let wash passed me.
The interview with Philip Dick is a great record to have - it's almost like me being with him and chatting to him. (Although I might have directed the discussions differently - if Philip had allowed it!) I also appreciated Robert Anton Wilson's essay at the end - it's provocative, informative and a credit to this book with its challenge to Mr Apel's personal experience with Philip Dick, after his death (i.e. after Philip Dick's death, not Mr Apel's - I know that neither of those options make much sense to twenty-first century people - imbued as we are with rationalism and scientific method). Mr Wilson's philosophy of believing nothing mirrors my own except that I believe EVERYTHING - or at least, everything that I personally experience.
So what of the remainder of Mr Apel's book? His own experiences of 'connection' with Philip Dick after Philip Dick's death. The wole idea of life after death - or at least existence after death - is so tantalising, so seductive, that it is easy to be absorbed in someone else's testimony. But to me, we have a mind to use and we should use it for our own evaluation of the cosmos we are embedded in. My 'faith' is based on my experience and I will be neither uplifted nor crushed by someone else's experiences or harangues - no person and no written text. Consequently Mr Apel's narrative is of interest but is essentially meaningless to me - I can neither believe nor misbelieve - it might just as well be a fantasy or the history of Atlantis or a theory about what wiped out the dinosuars.
But for all that I am not offended by Mr Apel telling his tale - we all have the right to speak and to hear. And in line with this I will tell a story of my own. My fascination with Philip Dick grew from the mid sixties. The puzzles the plots often present, the unique humour, the unexpected twists and so on are part of the appeal the novels have. But there is something else. I read and re-read the novels and short stories so that now I know the twists, I have some grasp of the puzzles, I've experienced the humour before - so it's not surprise that tantalises me. And yet each time I start re-reading I find myself engrossed beyond any rational explanation. I know that Philip Dick has technical skills as a writer (although some critics seem to like to decry certain aspects of Philip Dick's grammar or plotting as if language and the structure of stories are static things and alternative techniques cannot be used or accepted). But I'm sure it's not just technique that attracts me. One of the last of Philip Dick's book that I read (so late in publication) was 'The Broken Bubble'. I was startled by a paragraph in it. It seemed that I had written this - it was my voice that was speaking. How could Philip Dick - who I never had the privelege to meet - know these thoughts of mine?
And what of life after death - what does my experience tell me? I suggest a study of Mahler's last three great orchestral works is revealing (and Mahler was a composer who Philip Dick referred to at times). The eighth symphony is the traditional view of salvation (reward, not punishment - Mahler had excluded punishment in the Resurrection symphony - 'there is only God's heavenly love'); 'The Song of the Earth' is the resigned acceptance of separation; and the ninth symphony - well for me it contains a great outburst of a dying person looking back in their last gasp at the world they are leaving and connecting with those left behind. I have experienced that same gasp - not from dying persons - but as if it has been left at particular places in the fabric of the cosmos ready for any mind that passes that way and is so attuned to grasp, regardless of the time of their passing. But that is all my experince - make of it what you will.

A personal connection
By pampasboy
I read every book Philip Dick had written before I was out of my teens. In the intervening 40 years I've reread them all. What struck me about Dick's books was that I felt he was speaking directly to me. This is kind of odd, considering the vast majority of his work is in third person--and third person omniscient to boot--but that sense of a personal connection nevertheless remains. Apel's The Dream Connection heightens this sense. It's not too surprising that this should be so in the lengthy interview. Here we have Dick himself talking, and why couldn't he be directing his words to me? I'm a big fan, and he's obviously addressing his fans. But what's surprising is that this sense also comes through in Apel's highly personal narrative of his own experience with Phil Dick, both during and after Dick's life. It's weird, it's out-there, but what's so odd about Philip Dick inspiring a weird, out-there experience? How could Phil Dick inspire anything but? Anton Wilson's piece at the odd of the book is also quite interesting, but Phil Dick and Scott Apel are the stars of this book. Highly recommended.

The Mind Behind the Masterpieces
By Hopster
The centerpiece of this book is a remarkable interview of Philip K. Dick, in which he provides some personal history, particularly with regard to his writing, and displays his quirky (what else?) sense of humor. Best of all, it shines a light on the extraordinary mind behind the books. Anyone who loves Valis, the most personal of his novels, needs to read this. Also included are an essay by Apel, a friend of Dick's, about his personal "dream connection" with Dick after the author's death. It almost reads like an appendix to Valis. Throw in an essay by the always interesting Robert Anton Wilson, and you have a book that all fans of Philip K. Dick should read.

Review

"This is a must-read for those who participate in the care of patients with dizziness, vertigo, and disequilibrium. The book provides a comprehensive, but not necessarily scholarly or exhaustive, review of the various syndromes that might cause dizziness. It also covers a relatively new concept -- that of psychogenic dizzy syndrome, which is highly informative. This is a very useful book that would be helpful for anyone who sees patients complaining of dizziness." -- Aki J Matsuoka, MD, PhD, Doody's

Trust No One
By Kindle Customer
Chunichi has done it again. This was a real fast and easy read. Breeze was a ex-drug dealer who sets out to live a normal life with the love of his life and his children. He follows all the rules and even works a full-time job as a janitor, but when the pressure becomes too much he reverts back to what he knows best. Breeze started living the life until he crosses Mr. Bigg, then it all starts to go down hill. I won't say anymore just don't pass this one up.
