The perfect compliment to a desire to exercise.

This book and Judy Alter's earlier book, Surviving Exercise, have the answers I've been looking for. I love to exercise, but I've been plagued with injuries for years. And of course, the injuries set me back and have kept me from exercising as much as I'd like. I've been looking for some sound, scientific information on stretching, but have found very little. I had the feeling stretching would help prevent injuries, but what's the right way to stretch? I had found scientific evidence that stretching can CAUSE injuries, too. It's amazing to me how many books are available about stretching that have no scientific basis whatsoever. Some get their authority from tradition (like yoga) and some are merely the author's opinion. But finally someone has written a book about how to stretch so the stretching actually helps and doesn't harm you. Judy tells you exactly how to do the exercises. Sometimes the stretches are a lot like the ones I've done before, but small differences -- how you hold your foot, the position of your head, whether or not you're keeping your back straight -- can make the difference between hurting yourself with the stretch or helping yourself. I'm the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, and one of the most important things I recommend is exercise. It makes a big difference in your general attitude and sense of well-being. Alter's book tells you how you can KEEP exercising for your lifetime, without pain or injury. I love this book and highly recommend it.

EVERYONE can benefit from this book

I own this and have given it as a gift many times. I challenge you to learn and do the series of stretches "For All Active People" every day for a week, and see how much more un-tense and flexible you feel! You may not even be aware of just how tight and tense your muscles habitually are from your everyday living, until you release them with these stretches.
There are also other stretch series included, some examples being for Dancers and Professional Athletes, or People Who Sit a Lot. Alter lists stretches which benefit every part of the body from head to toe, and gives easy to follow instructions on how to do each one, with troubleshooting text on how not to do them as well, and clear line drawings.
I have found that the best time to do these stretches is at night after exercise, then take a hot shower and go to sleep. I wake in the morning feeling utterly relaxed, with my leg muscles twitching as though they'd LIKE to tense up as usual, but can't :-D Unfortunately I am a morning person with a fairly physically stressful job, and am almost always way too tired to do this... it takes me a good 45 minutes to work through the "For All Active People" series. So I usually end up doing them in the morning before work, since that is when I have the most energy. If I'm on the Nordic Track by 5:15 I have time to stretch and shower before running out the door to work :-D

A wise and well written guide

This book has really helped me. I'm age 47 and have been plagued by upper back & neck problems; now I manage that condition with both stretching & strengthening exercises based on Alter's book. I've also learned from this book how to position pillows when I sleep, how to manage my son's tendancy for shin splints, and more. I found this book to contain a lot of wisdom, tons of exercises (most are easy to do) very specific to areas of the body or to problems, and written in a clear and very straightforward way.

Much better than Kakashi's Story

This story is set 2 years after the Manga ends focusing on, naturally, Shikamaru. Kakashi has ascended to position of Hokage already, and the alliance of the Great Nations has taken root. This story credibly describes Shikamaru's conflicting desires: to be his lazy self, but still wanting to fulfill his now numerous responsibilities as a ninja and respected veteran from the 4th Great Ninja War. People have come to rely on his strategic skills and level-headed judgment, pressuring him into feeling he must push aside his childish wants and embrace being an "adult". Of course, a timely villain emerges to test his mettle and challenge his ideals.

This story features brief but faithful interactions with Kakashi, Naruto, Sakura, Ino, Choji, Sai, Temari, Gaara and Kurenai, and plants seeds for some of the other novels in this series, making it enjoyable for fans. The translator still goofs on calling his "Shadow Strangulation" jutsu "Suffocating Darkness", and, while I know the anime dub translates his catchphrase as "What a drag," I'm used to subs that always prefer "How troublesome". (Just a personal nitpick.) One other nitpick is that the author incorrectly says Shikamaru became a Chunin because "the examiners handed down top marks for Shikamaru's sportsmanlike admission of defeat." That's such a basic storyline mistake, it's cringeworthy, but oh well.

The only other jarring notes are the 2 Anbu characters invented for the story - one is a teenage girl that has an annoying speech pattern and the other a middle aged man who is bad at wordplay and puns. They seem to have been given these traits solely to distinguish themselves from one another, as both are completely dull otherwise and only exist in the story to propel the plot along. (Shikamaru needs 2 comrades [that aren't Ino or Choji] on a mission: hey, presto, it could be any 2 people, it doesn't matter at all who they are). I think it's strange to invent 2 contrived Anbu instead of having an Ino-Shika-Cho focus, but the story believably goes in another direction. I just found the Anbu a tad grating.The story could perhaps have had more Temari x Shikamaru conversation or non-battle related interactions, but I understand that these are not meant to be very long or complicated.

Overall, this was much more enjoyable and believable than Kakashi's Story. The characters are depicted faithfully from the manga with no standout clashes in personality, and Shikamaru's struggles are relatable to the everyperson juggling youthful desires while having adulthood responsibilities with sometimes frightening expectations. So, if you are a Shikamaru fan, this is a nice addition to the Naruto-verse.

Best one so far

While I enjoyed Kakashi's Story, this novel certainly surpassed its predecessor in just about every aspect. If you have to choose between buying one of those two, I recommend this one.

No major spoilers:

Shikamaru's character in the anime has always bored me a little bit. However, from the start of this novel, I became more and more of a fan while reading his thought process. Where Kakashi's Story felt a bit like fan-fiction with convoluted action sequences that would have been better published as a manga, Shikamaru's Story fully takes advantage of printed word by presenting Shikamaru's philosophies and internal conflicts with satisfying action sequences. It gives a more thorough look on the introspective of one of the Naruto universe's most intellectual characters.

The newly introduced side characters aren't all that captivating, but getting the deeper perspective from Shikamaru makes up for that. The main villain is a bit more interesting that the other typical villains in the Naruto universe.

Overall, I obviously enjoyed this book and will probably read it again in the future. If you liked Kakashi's Story or you were a bit underwhelmed by it, then you may enjoy this one....and don't worry, he doesn't say, "What a drag," every other line like he does in the anime.

It was great to read about a secondary, yet a very important character from the Naruto franchise. Shikamaru's always been an intriguing character with side story potential so I'm glad we finally got one. As for the actual story I'm breaking down my ratings into the following categories:

Story plot: 4 (not as enjoyable as Kakashi's book, but it showcased Shikamaru's character magnificently)
Writing: 5 (I believe these books are direct translations from the Japanese versions so I was very impressed when the book read like it had been written by an English author)
Characters: 5 (I LOVE that Naruto, Sasuke, basically all the major characters don't come in to save the day. This is truly Shikamaru's book. That being said it was still nice to see small cameos of the other characters)

As the Olympic Games open in the land where it all began, it is both fitting and delightful to sit down with this beautiful, informative book. Miller, an archaeologist and professor of classics at the University of California at Berkeley, brings the ancient Greek athletic festivals to life by reconstructing the scene at one of the Panhellenic games and explores broader themes such as the integral role they played in society and politics. For almost 12 centuries, beginning in 776 B.C. at Olympia in the Peloponnese (not at Mount Olympus, as one often hears), the games were so popular that nothing was allowed to stand in the way; even battles were temporarily halted in deference to the athletic competition. Olympia was the site of only one of four major contests; the others were at Delphi, Isthmia and Nemea. The closest visual link to the classic athletic festivals comes from paintings on amphoras, huge vessels that held as much as 39 liters of olive oil. These were offered as prizes at the games; one side depicted the event for which the prize was given. Modern fans would find other striking differences between today's contests and the original games: There were no second-place prizes--you won or you lost. There were no team sports. Fouls were punished by flogging. Athletes performed nude. By the fourth century A.D., with the spread of Christianity and the waning of belief in the Greek gods, the games "ceased completely to play any meaningful role in society." They were revived in something resembling their modern form in 1896.

This exhaustive survey by a Berkeley archeologist covers not only the Olympic Games but the related festivals at Delphi, Isthmia, and Nemea (where Miller is in charge of excavations), and uses evidence from vase painting, statuary, and the remains of ancient stadiums to elucidate such details as halteres (special weights used by long jumpers) and the hysplex, a complicated gate intended to prevent false starts. By our standards, many of the events were brutal; an unfortunate boxer named Kreugas had his intestines ripped out in a bout at Nemea. But Miller identifies a specifically Greek ideal in the fact that the athletes, regardless of social standing, competed on equal footing and would even submit to flogging if they fouled. This is a far cry from the behavior of the Roman Emperor Nero, who breezed through Greece in A.D. 67, winning some eleven hundred events; at Olympia, he fell out of his chariot and failed to finish the race but was still awarded the victory crown.

Everything you wanted to know about the Greek games, and more

Everybody knows that the Olympics started in ancient Greece over 2,000 years ago, but nobody seems to know much about those games. Well, the author of this book really knows his stuff. He gives lots of detailed information, and answers lots of questions that you never thought to ask.

My personal interest in the subject was not so much about the sports aspect of the ancient games, but more about how those competitions illuminated the Bible's use of athletic metaphors. The Apostle Paul used a number of them. I have gotten some insight on the metaphors, but I've also been drawn in to the workings of the games, the contestants, the officials, and, of course, the games themselves.

The author uses many Greek words in his writing, but explains each one when it is first used. (I wish I could remember them all). Having some knowledge of the Greek language is not necessary, but will make some things easier to follow.

The book is lavishly illustrated with dozens of pictures of Greek vases and inscriptions that depict the ancient athletes performing in their events - most of the time, completely naked. Modern readers (especially men) will find it surprising, I suppose, that for most events, this was exactly how it was done (I guess that motivated them to run really fast). And the gymnasium was the place where they practiced and performed naked. And that is the meaning od the Greek word, gumnos.

I think this book will set the standard for information on the ancient Greek games. I highly recommend it.

A Game Changer

First of all, let me tell you the condition that I was in when I read this book, because it totally changed my life. I was involved in the drug culture of the '60s; and my life went downhill fast. I started reading the King James Bible for spiritual help. That's all I had. I saw that I needed help, so I asked my mother the have our local Greek Orthodox priest come over to help me understand the Bible. Sounds reasonable, right? I showed him Malachi 2:7 from the King James: " For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts." Well needless to say, he couldn't explain this scripture. I then asked him how I could follow Jesus in my life. A reasonable question. He told me not to think too much about these things. By the way when he first came over he bummed a cigarette off me, instead of offering a prayer. When he left he had his hand out to my mother for money! Then he left. I could see that that religion didn't have the truth from God's word. Note that at this time I didn't know a thing about Jehovah's Witnesses.

I kept reading my King James Bible, then I came to Exodus 6:3: "And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them." This hit me like a ton of bricks. I was never told that God's Name was Jehovah in my church.

So I picked up the phone and called Jehovah's Witnesses. I didn't even know who they were. But I started studying "The Truth That Leads to Eternal Life" in Dec. 1970. I studied for a month , but I felt that these people were just too good and that I was a hopeless sinner, so I stopped studying.

However while I was studying the brother gave me a box full of books. Six months later I picked up The Babylon the Great book. This was exactly what I was looking for. It exposed the falseness of the religions that only claim to be Christian, but disown God by their actions, for example like getting involved with politics, and teaching unbiblical doctrines like hellfire and the trinity. This book discusses Revelation Ch. 14-22 as well as parts of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Daniel. It also refers many times to the book "The Two Babylons" by Alexander Hislop.

This book completely changed my life and I got baptized in Dec. 1971. And I never looked back.
