A timely and important book

This timely and extremely important book shows us the way to a dialogue that goes beyond the old zero-sum games. The book is subtitled "Finding Faith Without Fanaticism," and Hirschfield -- a Rabbi and former gun-carrying member of the extremist wing of Israel's settler movement -- speaks with authority about his personal epiphany. It is easy to be pluralistic and believe in dialogue when one is an oppressed minority, staring at the barrel of a gun. But to have one's finger on the trigger and reach the same conclusion is rare, and far more compelling. Hirschfield powerfully describes his experiences and the alternative path he chose to pursue.
The remainder of the book elaborates on Hirschfield's central insight: that oftentimes we gain nearly as much from recognizing what we have in common as we do from debating our differences. Like many of our greatest teachers, Hirschfield imparts this lesson through an engaging combination of philosophical analysis, personal stories, and close and innovative reading of traditional Biblical texts. We follow Hirschfield as he travels to places where his views are presumably unwelcome -- to Berlin, to Moscow, to Fez, Morocco -- and learn from watching his examples.
The book's lessons are not reserved for geopolitics. Hirschfield writes persuasively and easily about interpersonal relationships as well, sharing stories from his own life, from Adam and Eve, and from The Cosby Show. Nor is the book's message concealed behind academic jargon. To the contrary: Hirschfield's writing is refreshingly conversational, casual without being dumbed-down.
Ultimately, the import of this book lies in the insight that there's more to being right than proving another wrong. It is a powerful affirmation that truth can be absolute -- real truth, not a watered-down simulacrum called "truth" -- but it need not be absolutist.

Happily even-keeled

Being to the "right" of the author (both religiously and politically), I anticipated another in a line of Shalom Auslander- Richard Dawkins-Christopher Hitchens anti-religious rant against those who are orthodox in their beliefs. Surprisingly, Hirschfield actually validates those who believe, in all forms and ideals. What is new and even refreshing is the lessons he brings from a life of open voyage. Truthfully, we can find disagreement on the issues of intermarraige as well as eating lobster on shabbos- but I think Hirschfield would have it no other way.
Towards the end of the book, when Brad writes "idealism is a part of faith, or perhaps faith is the ultimate expression of idealism", he encapsulates the essence of belief and religion for so many. The striving for unprovable understanding, grasping the intangible. Simply, a must read philosphical treatise in under 250 peages.

Faith without Imposing One's Own Truth on Another

Rabbi Hirschfield has written a highly accessible and personal account of the hard-learned lesson that one can have a deep and abiding faith WITHOUT the necessity of losing one's ability to maintain what Rabbi Jonathan Sacks has termed "the Dignity of Difference"--i.e. the ability to respect the possibility that an other can have legitimate faith and access to truth as well. This is an incredibly important lesson for our time. At a time in world history in which the secular pursuit of truth that has dominated the Western world for the past 400+ worlds is not yielding the promised fruit, and people are turning back to the faith traditions for ultimate answers to the questions of "Why?" and "Who am I?" (ie. questions of meaning and identity, respectively), there is a burning need to recognize and develop the positive values of religion and belief for humankind, and to minimize the risk of faith-driven mutually assured destruction. For, as Chief Rabbi Sacks has pointed out, the greatest and most powerful weapon of mass destruction is the human mind. And yet, at the same time, it is also the most powerful engine of hope for humanity.

Remembering Rorty

This book is as old as I am. Still, when I was first confronted with the problem of Richard Rorty in the late '90s, it was -- as one might guess from Rorty's position at that time as Philosopher Laureate, the most public face of a discipline which often shuns attention -- *au courant* enough to contribute an impetus and general casts of mind to the debate on many topics. By now the book is, like me, old enough to no longer be directly relevant to the livest currents of thought in analytic philosophy, and somewhat beside the point to Continentalists poring over Badiou and Agamben (neither of whom Rorty ever commented on directly, although one can guess he would not have been fond of the "fundamentalist" tone of some of their arguments). However, it is still relevant to understanding what philosophy has been and what it could be, perhaps even more so now that the dust has settled and we can historicize the inveterate historicist.

Beginning as a student of ancient philosophy who had been taught by Richard McKeon and Leo Strauss, Rorty entered the consciousness of mainstream philosophy in the '60s with a bold new plan for understanding the operations of the mind: namely, that there was no such thing, no "mind" presenting an ahistorical problem for science and cultural inquiry, just a collection of tropes about personal awareness that did not militate for a "reifying" approach to psychology. This position -- called "eliminative materialism" and subsequently enthusiastically adopted by many bright young scholars working in the philosophy of psychology -- was a textbook example of "analytic" philosophy, that approach to philosophical research predominant in the English-speaking world, which places greater stress on clarity and rigor than historical learning and political import. But Rorty began to drift towards "Continental" thinkers, Europeans who doubted the possibility of a knock-down philosophical argument and who expected you to know your Plato (and much else) so well as to richly enjoy a series of punning plays on famous philosophical profundities.

This book, written when Rorty was still relatively young, begins his journey in synthesizing the approaches of analytic and Continental philosophy, joining what Kant called the "school" and "cosmic" conceptions of philosophy, striving for both exactitude and relevance. As Rorty explains early on, the focus here is primarily on bold thinkers in the analytic camp, people like Willard van Orman Quine and Wilfrid Sellars who started dismantling key preconceptions of logically-minded philosophers not long after the paint had first dried on these "rational reconstructions" of concepts like knowledge and truth that we were *finally* getting to the bottom of -- after 2500 years of muddling through. *Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature* takes the arguments of Sellars and Quine as exploding the idea that there is a timeless, ahistorical context for philosophical inquiry; drawing on the American Pragmatist tradition (which bulked very much larger in philosophical awareness after Rorty hit the scene), the author argues that what is called "philosophy" is really about what matters to us now, and that this might be very different than what was understandably important to a Kant or a Locke or an Aristotle.

Along the way Rorty talks about almost everything that had happened in analytic philosophy up to 1979, and his glosses of more "foundationalist" thinkers like Putnam and Fodor are well worth the price of admission: you will get a very clear idea of just why something like the "computational theory of mind" perhaps ought to be allowed to go on its merry way, while the "causal theory of names" has to be waylaid -- one is a fruitful program in a young science, not particularly beholden to its supposed ontological commitments, while the other takes uncontroversial logical arguments and attempts to wring metaphysical conclusions from them. To historicize the historicizer (as mentioned above) Rorty is speaking from a particular viewpoint at the further reaches of "post-positivism" as it existed in the '60s and '70s, and much of what you will find in contemporary journals blithely ignores his complaints. But the arguments, though perhaps less relevant than they once were, are extremely crisply rendered and Rorty's prose highly rewarding.

This "30th Anniversary Edition" avoids some of the mistakes made in preparing the anniversary edition of Quine's *Word and Object*: The themes of the attractive cover for the original and its readable typeface are maintained. Michael Williams, one of Rorty's most prominent students, draws attention in his Introduction to contemporary thinkers like Robert Brandom and Huw Price whose theses simply could not have existed without Rorty's example; David Bromwich provides a biographical Afterword which captures something of the subsequent importance of Rorty when he was nearly an American Sartre, combining philosophy and left-liberal politics in *The New Leader* and *The Nation* and drawing attention to discarded plans for "social hope" through his marvelous philosophico-cultural tract *Contingency, Irony and Solidarity*. If you already own the book, I don't think it's necessary to pick the new version up; but if you don't own the book, please acquire it.

Good Story

Georgie and Nina are best friends with one major difference. Georgie has long known she never wants kids and relishes the freedom that life choice brings. Nina on the other hand wants nothing more than to be a mother. Married for several years she and her husband have endured the rollercoaster of IVF with no success and it has taken its toll on their relationship. Deciding that she can't go through the torturous process again Nina and Georgie go out drinking one night and with her inhibitions lowered Nina asks her friend if she will be her surrogate.

Nobody is more surprised than Georgie herself when she reluctantly agrees to do the ultimate favour for her best friend. But as often happens in life things don't go quite as smoothly as planned, leading the two women on a journey that tests their friendship and teaches them surprising things about themselves. Georgie is hard to like at times and I can't say I really grew to enjoy her character. I don't know that she was as fully developed as she could have been, although she was realistic enough.

Although She's Having Her Baby explores the heartbreaking theme of infertility it does so in a way that includes many light hearted and humorous moments. Those who have been through pregnancy will relate to the cravings and unwelcome changes it brings to your body and those who haven't will gain some insight into what it is all about. The description of some of the mothers in the playground is funny but perhaps a little cliched.

All in all this is an enjoyable story with some surprising plot twists that kept it more interesting than the blurb suggests. I will say I enjoyed it more as it went along. The writing is good with an engaging style and the dialogue is natural and authentic for the characters. I also enjoyed the contemporary Australian setting. It is a promising debut for Lauren Sams and will no doubt appeal to those who enjoy an engaging chick lit novel.

Such a fab debut novel, funny and heartwarming. Ms Sam deals with a heart rending topic with a deft, light touch, the dialogue and characters fairly spring to life on the pages. Look forward to reading more from this clever new voice.
